ZPC UPCOMING PROJECTS
MARUHUBI PASSENGER TERMINAL PROJECT.
Zanzibar Port corporation (ZPC) signed a contract with a private operator ZF DEVCO for the development of a new modern passenger Terminal in the Maruhubi Area. The aim is to transform the tourism demand in Zanzibar, with an estimated 5000 ferry passengers per day, and up to 12000 passengers per day in high season.
The passenger terminal for fast ferries and RoRo vessels, it will also include Duty free Zone for B2B, international offices, retail shops, Marina, Leisure center, future possibility of seaplanes port.
MANGAPWANI PORT PROJECT
Mangapwani multipurpose port an industrial hub. the multiport will include the development Cargo handling and storage facilities for containerized cargo, CBM and jetty, strategic oil and gas reserve and logistic centers.
feasibility study has been completed, and RGoZ is in final stage to enter a contract with a contractor for the multipurpose container and bulk terminals.Tender has been issued for the Strategic oil and gas jetty and strategic reserves. The project is expected to be launched in 2024.
ZPC is currently cooperating with the Tony Blair Instute to develop a business plan and investment incentive package to promote foreign direct investment in the special economic zone in mangapwani to complement the port development and optimize economic growth.
KIZIMKAZI PORT PROJECT.
ZPC plans to develop a passenger Terminal in the southern region of Unguja , Kizimkazi area. The plan is accommodate the tourism demand in the region and link Kizimkazi, Makunduchi and Paje (South and Eastern Coast) which is the 2nd hotspot for tourism behind North region (Nungwi).
Due to proximity to Dar es salaam, a new ferry route of less then 1 hour from Kizimkazi to Dar es salaam could be established . With an aim to facilitate growth in passenger movement between Zanzibar and Mainland, promote tourism growth in the southern region, and open economic trade routes by minimizing logistic cost.
ZPC is in cooperation with TPA to develop sister ports between Kizimkazi and Dar es salaam to interlink the growing demand for business and tourism in the region.
FUMBA PORT PROJECT
Zanzibar Port corporation (ZPC) signed the first official Public and Private Partnership (PPP)in Zanzibar With Fumba Inland Container Depot / Terminal on the 10/05/2023, with aim of developing a fully operational port with modern equipment’s.
FICP intends to invest over 6m USD, in a free economic zone, an area approximately 4.96 hectors with capacity operations of 3000 TEUS.FICD intends to develop another economic gate way which intends to tackle the current challenges affecting Malindi Port.
FICD officially started operations on October-2023 , currently only receiving land craft vessels, with future plans of constructing a jetty to enable direct call from International liners vessels.
WETE PORT PROJECT
ZPC is currently developing a feasibility Study in partnership with the German consultancy firm Inros Lackner for modern passenger Terminal to redevelop Wete Port – Pemba.
The consultant is on final stage to develop detailed designs and plans for new modern passenger terminal. After completion of the Wete Port, all passenger terminal activities will be moved to Wete port to be a dedicated passenger handling port. Due to the close proximity to shumba port , it will be a direct route enhancement from Unguja to Wete to Shumba and finishing the route in Kenya.
ZPC in cooperation with development partners from Japan (JICA) are planning to finance the development of this new terminal in 2024/2025.
SHUMBA PORT PROJECT
Investment plans of up to 4 – 6 Million USD of a proposed passenger terminal in the Shumba area, located in Micheweni district , Pemba island. The development of a new passenger Terminal will be a gateway connection from Kenya to Tanzania- Zanzibar which will be a marine border due to the close proximity between Shumba and Mombasa-Kenya. This project will enable to enhance trade between or two neighboring nations, promote tourism flow between Kenya to Tanzania via Pemba, introduce affordable travel options between Tanzania and Kenya via ferry route and enhance economic growth of the region.
The estimated travel time will be 90 min from Pemba to Mombasa, (return ticket less than $50 USD). Air route (ZNZ – MBS) flight time : 45 – 60 mins (Return ticket above $200 USD per person). Road Route (TNG – MBS) travel time : 4 – 5 hours (Return ticket $ 20 – 40 per person)
